It graphically demonstrates how the main branches of the new cladistic classification system were established. A clade is a group of organisms that share a common physical characteristic.
Animals differ from other life forms in that they have at least two cell layers. This characteristic defines the Metazoa (Animal Kingdom) clade. The next major physical development was the addition of a third cell layer. All animals have them, except the primitive sponges and jellyfish. Thus each of these three groups is a clade.
